History of Engagement Rings

In today’s society, we’re quite familiar with the idea of an engagement ring. But where did this tradition come from? Anthropologists believe the tradition of giving engagement rings first originated from a Roman custom in which women wore rings attached to small keys, representing their husbands’ titles.

Officially, the first recorded diamond engagement ring was noted in 1477, when the Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned a diamond ring for his intended Mary of Burgundy. The chosen ring was a plain, yellow gold band embedded with small diamonds in the shape of an ‘M’.

Throughout the years, The Royal Household worked stunning gemstones into their choices of engagement rings. The more contemporary Royals have opted for stunning sapphires and bright green emeralds, all flanked with diamonds for that ultimate sparkle.

Meanwhile, the two-stone Toi et Moi engagement ring dates to the 18th century, when Napoleon Bonaparte presented his intended, Josephine, with an engagement ring featuring two pear-shaped stones, a blue sapphire, and a white diamond set in gold. This perfect ring hit the news again in 2013 when it was auctioned in France and sold for close to $1 million.

Turning to now, traditional styles have been made popular by jewellers like Tiffany & Co. and Cartier, who have set the design code for solitaire diamond engagement rings. Their signature blue and respectively red boxes have helped trend 4 and 6 claw single stone rings.

It goes to show that the perfect engagement ring is timeless and a symbol of love that lasts forever.

Alicia J, Trading in Certified Stones

At Alicia J Diamonds, we specialise in trading certified stones, which are carefully evaluated and given a GIA report confirming their colour, cut, clarity and carat size. The report also details any inclusions or fluorescents of a stone.

We understand the importance of transparency and accountability in the diamond industry and ensure that all of our diamonds are sourced ethically from world-leading suppliers and with the highest level of integrity.  As part of our quality control process, we check each diamond to ensure it matches our standards. Whether you’re buying vintage engagement rings, or contemporary designs, they’ll all be checked prior to being sold.

Once a ring is made, we send it off for independent valuation. This ensures you have a guide on its value for insurance purposes.

Engagement Ring FAQs:

We’ve done our best to try and answer some of the most frequently asked questions about engagement rings below:

Can You Help Me Choose An Engagement Ring?

Unsure as to what ring you want to buy or what would suit your partner? No problem. We have some simple ways to help you navigate the section process.

First take a look in their jewellery box tray and make a note of what colour jewellery they prefer, whether that’s yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or platinum.

If possible, be able to show us their personal style and let us know if they’ve dropped any hints or mentioned styles that they favoured.

It’s also useful for us to see the shape of your partner’s hand so the ring is not to tight or loose. We often advise on stone shape according to length and width of fingers.

Have a think about your ring budget (have a lower and upper end in mind) and we will guide you on available stones that fall within your spending range.

What Style of Engagement Ring Is Most Popular

We are often asked to make classic four and six claw solitaires using round brilliants, given that these are the most famous styles of engagement ring. With that said, trends change and right now oval shaped solitaires set on their own, or within a diamond halo or a hidden halo, on a skinnier band, are proving hugely popular.

How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Ring?

“They” say you should spend between one to three month’s wages on your ring. But honestly speaking, there are no hard or fast rules. Whatever you spend has meaning. We are most focussed on getting you a good quality certified stone that meets with your personal budget.
